About NAVHDA
Ontario Grand River Chapter
MESSAGE FROM THE OGR PRESIDENTGino The Ontario Grand River Chapter was sanctioned as a NAVHDA Chapter on January 18, 1985.  However, the history of the chapter goes beyond. NAVHDA was founded in 1969 with significant input from members in Ontario. Bodo Winterhelt lived in Ontario on his immigration from Germany and his knowledge of training the versatile dogs spread along with his ability to import Pudlepointers. His clients and contacts grew, and so did the desire to evaluate the performance of these versatile dogs. After several various forms of tests, a group of interested trainers gathered east of Toronto and in 1969 formed what is now the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association.  The “Ontario Chapter of NAVHDA” became one of the charter chapters.

The Ontario Chapter flourished and in late 1984 it was mutually decided to form two chapters within Ontario to allow for the additional development of the versatile dog. The Ontario Chapter dissolved and the Toronto Chapter and the Ontario Grand River Chapter were formed. Today the Ontario Grand River Chapter draws members from throughout southwestern Ontario offering training and testing for versatile dogs.

 While many names in the chapter have contributed over the years to the success of the Ontario Grand River Chapter and are still involved with NAVHDA, Dr. Ed Bailey, co –author of “The Training and Care of the Versatile Hunting Dog” ("the green book") and one of the judges from the first NAVHDA test stands out as the most recognizable.

An Introduction to NAVHDA
The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association
 is a nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to foster, promote,
 and improve the versatile hunting dog breeds in North America;
 to conserve game by using well trained reliable hunting dogs
 before and after the shot; and to aid in the prevention of
 cruelty to animals by discouraging non selective and uncontrolled
 breeding, which produces unwanted and uncared for dogs.

The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association is a legally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering, improving, promoting, and protecting the versatile hunting dog in North America.

Underlying these aims is the desire to serve the interests of game conservation, prevention of cruelty to animals, and the gun dog hunter by helping the hunter to train his dog to work before and after the shot, on land and in water.

NAVHDA is an excellent complement to the activities of sporting dog breed clubs and field trial organizations. It was created to supplement the activities of those clubs by providing a proven, standard method of evaluating the performance of all versatile hunting dogs, consistent with North American hunting practices, regardless of breed.

NAVHDA is organized on two levels:

The first level, NAVHDA International, operates under bylaws approved by its membership. These bylaws provide for officers elected by popular vote who, together with appointed directors, constitute an Executive Council charged with furnishing direction and guidance to NAVHDA programs.

The second level, local chapters of NAVHDA, are the "grass roots" organizations, which sponsor the training and testing programs. There are sanctioned chapters throughout the United States and Canada.
